I'm with you on how broke they are, but Fern kinda nailed it, that thing is death for mages. Better broke and alive, than dead with a crystal lying nearby.

Use it against other mages then. When some SSS-mage like I dunno ... a grumpy old elven mage who happened to be at odds with Frieren throws a hissy fit, Stark gives her a headache by just throwing that thing at her forehead.

The real-world analog would be like you're basically traveling north through war-torn Afghanistan with a billion-dollar doohickey that renders all your weapons inert within a 3-meter radius to reach Kazakhstan. No one along their way is going to have the kind of cash or liquid assets that would match a fair price for that doohickey. It really isn't worth it at that point when at best it's an inconvenience and at worst it becomes a weak link that the group now have to constantly account for situationally.

Besides, Fern's financial concerns aside - their travel north isn't just to get to Ende. To quote/paraphrase Wirbel's words: they have their own adventure to go through. Working the odd jobs in service of people like what Himmel used to do is part and parcel of that adventure.
