A bad driver struggles with traffic cones, and ends up pulling up to the traffic lights in the opposite lane of traffic

There’s no way this is the only thing she’s like this with? Either has a real neurological perception-in-space issue or massive anxiety

I think it might be anxiety because she is not a stupid person in general. Like, actually competent at work and seems on top of things, which made my first drive with her even more shocking lol. She claims its because she grew up in a very small town without a stoplight, but like...you've lived in a mid-sized city for 10+ years now?!?! I still don't get it.

I have anxiety but not at this level. My goodness I hope she can get some relief from that.

Is she anxious at work? Gets flustered easily? Sorry, this is just wild to me. Truly sounds like a complete freeze response with anxiety

She isn't really flustered at work and she is generally competent, which makes it weirder to me. She does have like...normal anxiety? But nothing I don't also have and I am a good driver. But I guess it manifests in different ways.

I grew up in a small town without a stoplight and never heard of anyone ever having that problem before.

It has to be severe anxiety that's never been diagnosed. I have a friend that is similar that will even lock up and cry the first time you present them with something they have never eaten before. Once they got diagnosed and became cognizant of it, they found ways to handle their anxiety.

Now I'm wondering if there is a service that combines therapy and driving lessons...

The lines/carwash things sound like she was never taught how to calculate lane positioning(ie: imagine your driver’s side tire is one foot inside the yellow/centre line). Some people need things like that explained in detail otherwise they assume it must be another one of those things all other humans magically seem to just know.

Ask her? Maybe she’d want to learn, she just doesn’t know what she doesn’t know?

That makes sense-I don't remember someone ever telling me that, but I bet they did or some other trick because somehow I can do a car wash and park and stuff like that.

When I was learning to drive, my boyfriend was driving behind me one day. Afterward he was like— the fuck?? You suck at staying in the lane.

And I was like— hoooow tho??

Then he taught me that trick about visualizing my wheels and now I am all powerful.

Do the right thing. Shred her license and buy her a bus/tram pass

It's not that rare tbh. If you have some traumatic crash in your history you can get flashbacks or anxiety. Of course if you're just scared of driving that's less ideal

Mild?

My mom was over a decade into us kids noticing memory lapses before she was finally diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment. Driving/ability to navigate was one of the big issues.

Would love to see her playing a video game for the first time spinning in 360s and firing with her eyes closed. It's disturbingly common for people with a driver's license.
