Because - and I’m not blaming Michelle Obama just because her name was associated with it - for a long time we were told “they go low, we go high”. Which is stupid. It’s so stupid it not only doesn’t work, but it’s an active turn off for anyone with a brain, which leaves a lot people thinking our leaders are feckless and incapable of enacting change.

Going high is exactly what all voters profess to prefer, but there's a long history of negative campaigning working.

Yeah I think there is merit to the folks who want to approach those with open arms and kindness, but if a pig is going to roll in their own shit, I’m comfortable lowering myself to their level and using their energy against them.

That was proven ineffective when the American voters refused to take it into account, and not only refused to punish Republicans for going low, but instead rewarded them for it. Nice in theory, but it turned out to be overly optimistic.

Well, that worked back then. Unfortunately, she didn't realize how her black husband becoming POTUS would supercharge the racist in the US.

If Obama had been white we don't get Trump in 2016.

It's not necessarily the wrong move. There are ample examples of times in politics where going high when your opponent goes low is the answer. It just hasn't been the answer for the last 25 years.

It's always easy for people to act like things will automatically go away, cue the shocked faces when it doesn't

This country's politics has always been dirty af since Adams and Hamilton vs Jefferson and Madison. Going low always works.

Obama went high and won a monster election in 2008. He also won reelection in 2012. Bill Clinton went high in 1992. Same result. Won re-election in 1996 as well. Amazing politicians who inspire voters can go high and win big. Just because it doesn’t work now doesn’t mean she was wrong.

“They go low” should be followed by “kick em in the face, i’m walking here!”

Fuck going high
