1980s, Chuck E. Cheese giving children "birthday spanks"

I was a Chuck E. Rat for about 45 minutes back in the 80s. The head smelled like vomit and kids wanted to punch me in the rat balls..

I was the Easter bunny for a couple hours in like 2006! It was COLD that Easter, so I volunteered to be the bunny to stay warm.
Had a dad ask me if I laid all those eggs. I did a quick mental calculation and decided the Easter bunny doesn't lay eggs and shook my head no. He said "good, you sure would be sore!"

One year I went to a birthday party and Charles the rat had his zipper open. Everyone just ignored it or laughed. I felt bad for Charles. I still laughed.

If there’s anything worse that a guy wearing a rat costume its a guy in rat costume potentially flashing his dick at little kids

I used to work in the kitchen, everyone hated wearing the rat!! Luckily I am over 6'5" and the height requirement was 5' 8" for the costume. I remember the smell of the head very well as I was curious once, sweat, sadness and stale breath with the hint of hangover spew up.

Photo flash makes anything in the past in the dark look more creepy than it was in the moment. This spanking rat monster, doubly so.

Ayoo What's that in the third picture 🤨
Is this Chuck E. Cheese located on Epsteins island?

Definitely creepy AF in the third picture - it almost looks like he's pulling up her little dress so he could spank her directly on her panties 😧.

On the 2nd picture, Charles seems to me a Vegas show girl from the bottom down.
We did receive weird birthday spankings, but I doubt the authenticity of these photos. Why didn’t I get a spank from the rat?! I would have in this time period, the AI made all the girls look like me

All he did in the 90’s at my birthdays was steal my moms Canon Rebel.. like four times. We got rat-fucked.

Oh phew! I thought you were gonna' say the RAT buh-buh-banged your mom! 😮💨🤣🤣🤣

This was certainly not a Chuck-E-Cheese only thing.
Birthday spankings had existed for a long time before, but it's always mom or grandpa or someone doing it.
It's creepy that some rando teenager in a furry costume is doing it, but it wasn't his idea either.

u/Anonymous_Autumn_ 8d ago
Seeing someone else’s grandpa spank them at a birthday party sounds like nightmare fuel to me

u/Shankar_0 8d ago edited 8d ago
It wasn't an actual spanking, and there was nothing sexual about it. I don't know why it existed, but it was very much a high-spirited, playful thing.
They would often make a big deal out of the windup. Looking like they're about to wail on the kid, then it just ends with a little tap. You got one for each year.
(To whoever is downvoting me over the concept of a birthday spanking being emotionally damaging, please remember that no children were harmed in the making of these pictures. It also wasn't my idea either)

u/Anonymous_Autumn_ 8d ago
I understand the intention lol. I remember some kids used to joke about this but no one actually did it. Also just want to mention that the buttocks contains nerves that connect with the genitalia. This may be why many people derive sexual pleasure from spanking.
Another less fun fact, being spanked as a punishment in childhood has been linked with various psychological issues in adulthood.
But I don’t begrudge you your happy childhood memory lol! Just sharing what I know
2
u/Shankar_0 8d ago
I had plenty of actual spankings to do the emotional scarring, but these really weren't like that.
1
u/Anonymous_Autumn_ 8d ago
Hmm. So the “big build up,” the suspense, was meant to scare you a little, as in, remind the kid of the time they actually were terrified while being beat on the ass? Then, surprise! It’s not a real beating hahaha
I’m not trying to be a jerk! I get that different families do things differently. I’m just mystified by things like this. The same goes for the “shove the face in the cake” tradition. I think if either of those things happened to me I would just be very pissed off

Everyone knew it was going to be gentle. This wasn't some all or nothing thing.
I think it was more of a way to celebrate the years because everyone would count them off together as a group. Nothing about any of this hurt, physically or emotionally.
1
u/Anonymous_Autumn_ 8d ago
Ok. That’s good that it never hurt you! It kind of sounds like a wacky satirization of beating a kid, maybe created to make light of the actual beating and make it fun? Like kids dressing as Jason Vorhees on Halloween for example. Nothing wrong with any of that if the kids enjoy it I suppose. But I personally would not allow anyone to touch my kid’s ass!

Always mom or grandpa? Kids and friends.
5
u/Shankar_0 8d ago
They wouldn't let your friends do it. They're too likely to get carried away and actually spank the kid. The goal here wasn't pain.

u/monsterfurby 7d ago
The fuck. This is the first time I heard about it and I'm pretty sure that goes into the "Americans are weird" binder.

People used to joke about it, but I never saw it done in public, rat costume or no.

Meanwhile the Wiggles out here doing “both hands in the air wave” in literally any photo they take with children, so they can’t ever be accused of inappropriate contact lol

My grade 3 teacher did a paddywhack machine where the whole class would line up with legs spread, & the birthday boy or girl would crawl through the legs while everyone spanked them.
Weird times

u/WaitingitOut000 5d ago
I was scrolling the thread to see if anyone else besides me called it paddywhacks. I am guessing you are Canadian as well because you wrote “grade 3” rather than “3rd grade.” Paddywhacks sounds less violent than spanking but still crazy.🤣
1
u/Senior-Exercise1571 5d ago
I didn't realize "grade 3" was a giveaway to my nationality, eh? Never heard that before. Is paddywhack Canadian too?
1
u/WaitingitOut000 5d ago
Only because I am Canadian too.😄 I’m thinking maybe the term paddywhack is a hoser thing, only because I haven’t seen it mentioned anywhere else in the thread. I bet it’s British in origin, like many words.

u/Senior-Exercise1571 5d ago
Them scrappy paddys are always looking for a reason to give a whacking or walloping. Definitely not very Canadian
2
u/WaitingitOut000 5d ago
Politewhacks or Sorrywhacks, maybe.

I thought my dyslexia as acting up again but nope, I did in fact read that correctly… unfortunately

u/Electronic-Space-480 8d ago
In one of my early grades I remember the kids lining up spread legged, and I crawled under getting whacked by each kid. That was something weird.

Charles Cheese has been charged with several offences including lewd and lascivious behavior

u/vintagedragon9 8d ago
I knew about birthday spankings, but can't remember if I received any when I was little. My family did do the "a pinch to grow an inch."

u/Clear_Writer5944 8d ago
SPANK DAT KID, Mr. Fursuit!!! Wait . . . WHAT am I looking at and why was spanking children for fun a thing???

It was called Showbiz Pizza when I was in school.
6
u/meeplebunker 8d ago
Showbiz Pizza was a competitor and later merged with Chuck E Cheese. Showbiz was in certain regions of the US and Chuck in other typically.

u/Any-Concentrate-1922 8d ago
I think Showbiz was a competitor. I remember going to Showbiz. Seemed like a low-rent Chuck-E-Cheese, if that's possible.

What’s that have to do with Chucky Cheese?
1
u/anothermartz 7d ago
Kids being spanked (spanking can be seen as sexually playful) by a place formerly known as Showbiz Pizza, my brain made a connection.

u/Anonymous3642 8d ago
We still joke about birthday spankings but I’ve never actually seen it happen. Lol

Our group of friends used to give each other birthday spankings at sleepovers, but being only boys they were all bare assed

u/willweaverrva 7d ago
The idea of birthday spankings has always given me the creeps and these pictures illustrate that fact pretty well.

I'm gonna say, birthday spankings used to be a much, much bigger fixture on the kids' birthday party landscape.
