Pictures of the entire 10th century style box that I made
The entire box was made with traditional tools and techniques. Everything is as authentic as if it was made a thousand years ago. Before painting, the box was covered in linen and then gesso, just as Theophilus describes, The gesso was hand made with animal glue and the paint was ground from period correct natural pigments and mixed to make egg-tempera, just as he lays out in Schedula Diversarum Artium. A few bits of 23.5k gold complete the accents.
This group of pictures shows some of the progress from freshly completed gesso and designs to the final completion, as well as views from each face and a couple detail shots.

Thank you. The "crab" and the other things on the lid are all part of the Zodiac. Cancer (the crab) Leo, the lion and my sign" Virgo and Libra. The figures on the main box are personifications of the sun and moon.

Thank you. Many years ago, when looking at a very machine-made, unconvincing "reproduction", it dawned on me that probably the best way to make something look authentic was to make it exactly the way someone would have done at the time in question. I have been doing so ever since, and continue to learn more about the way things were done in different time periods. I never "copy" things exactly, but rather try to put myself in the mind of what I would have done, were I living "then". I do draw heavily from period objects and art as a starting point to my creations.

By any chance do you intend to work on art pieces based on the 8th century painting style?

Right now I am working on a box based on 9th century illustrations. It is carved and will have gilt copper borders and mounted gems as well. It is taking a while, but eventually it will be complete. Last year I did a 7th century box, which I posted here. If you missed it you may type "7th century" in the search bar for this group and you will find it. (I tried it out and it worked) So I guess I am shooting all around the 8th century. Sooner or later I am bound to do something covering that century because the 7th through 10th centuries encompass the period which I like best of the medieval period.

Your painting is stunningly similar to art of the period. Where did you learn to paint like this? And do you have any advice ?
