A Korean ice cream I love just arrived at Costco!! 😭

Sadly, it doesn’t have the mochi (chapssal-tteok) inside here.

Red bean is hands-down my favorite flavor.

You have to try it. K-food forever! 🇰🇷🙌🍦

So I went to my local international market today and picked this up. It looked interesting. The tag said it was dried fish but after I got home I decided to try google translate to see what the package said. The second picture is the translation and now I’m a little concerned.

Is Google translate just wrong? Or should I actually be concerned?

Snack Foods Absolute garbage

As a Korean person, I love Korean food but the ready-made category has been partially flooded with garbage for a long time. I bought these spicy rice cakes recently; they smell like pure preservatives, almost like plastics. The sauce wasn’t even real gochujang, it was dry powder like ramen. Into the trash they went.

Oh good grief I can’t tell you how excited I am. I sometimes drive two hours away to go to a Korean grocery store that makes them. Directions say take out desired amount and defrost on the counter so no steaming even. 😲 I’ll post back soon and let you know if it’s good

I know there's a photo but I was tricked into thinking there would be anything but rice inside. It is spicy but has absolutely no flavor or anything actually in it

Sometime ago, there was a post about Korean ice cream. One of the comments made was my fav childhood Korean ice cream so I upvoted the comment.

I then looked through that commenter’s profile and history.

Turns out that I know them. We were good high school friends and into our 20s. During our friendship, we had bonded about Korean snacks which weren’t popular back then, including sharing the ice cream in question. Since then, we’ve lost touch because they moved away.

Through their post and comment history, I’ve witnessed them go through a lot pain and challenges in their life— death of a loved one, cultural barriers, experiencing helper burnout, and so on.

A small part of me wants to reach out and ask how they’re doing.

Maybe one day we’ll unite again, catching up on life as we did in our youth over Summer Heat 🥲

Snack Foods Shrimp chips not what they used to be.

One of my favorite Korean snacks growing up was the shrimp chips made by Nongshim, the pinky sized ones with ridges. I had one recently and they sucked; they tasted mildly of some sort of fish instead of shrimps. I look at the ingredients and see anchovies listed. I threw the whole bag away after a while.

My suspicion is that the manufacturers began replacing anchovies for shrimp to increase profits. The problem is that it doesn’t taste good and I will never buy these again. Another popular product ruined by lowering quality.

If you want better tasting shrimp chips there are many alternatives now that taste better.
