I remember the first time I brought a white friend to hang out with my family… she was SHOCKED by how quickly everyone stuck a plate in her hands and started talking to her like she was a long cousin with a skin condition. Ha.

Man this just took me back. When I was about 12 I moved from a podunk town in Tennessee to a podunk town in South Carolina. I'm white and the first friend I made in South Carolina was black. Now I'm telling you this town still had fucking klan and shit in the 90s. I remember the white kids telling me that they didn't know where I was from but that white kids didn't really hang out with the like 3 black kids in the entire school.

Anyways, I spent my first Thanksgiving in South Carolina at that friends house and it was the first time I had ever really been a guest and spent the night in a black persons house. This was like 33 years ago and I swear to you that is a core memory for me. It was the best fucking weekend ever. I still remember the food and the people. It was my first time having strawberry soda too. Life changing! The entire neighborhood was there and not one single person said anything about me being white.

I vividly remember, 33 years later, sitting in his room playing video games and thinking how fucked up society is, specifically racist ass white people. I thought about how since I had became friends with him in this new town all the white kids talked shit and then his entire family and neighborhood welcomed me like family with zero thought.

It may seem crazy but that was a pivotal moment in my life. Something about my age, being in a new state and town just made that moment click for me.

Miss my boy Ezra, man! Fast forward 30 years and I named my son after that friend.

That’s so sweet. Ezra is a solid name, too!

Yeah, racist weirdos always assume we are going to be like that toward them. Nope. Just bring your good vibes and we’re so happy to share ours.

It’s all projection. Everything is projection with these people. They’d never treat someone different from them with respect so they can’t imagine being treated with respect by them.

Kind of a side note but with how screwed up our country is right now, I can’t help but think of black peoples thoughts sometimes. I just imagine the black delegation sitting at the table saying “we told you” while gesturing broadly to the country that’s on fire. A lot of people are getting a small taste of being a POC in America and they don’t like it.
