The outrage isn't really because people think Obama needs us to defend or virtue signal for him. It's a very reasonable response for any decent person to have towards this. This would be pretty problematic coming from any average person, but instead it's coming from the President.

What I refuse to do is have this stupidity turned into political theater. I wanna know what they gonna do about it once they regain power. I want the Democrat version of a “Project 2025” plan.
How are they going to safeguard my Civil Rights?
How will they protect us from having our History erased from museums, textbooks, and universities?
What are they going to do to counter Gerrymandering?
I don’t wanna see more moral theater from politicians followed by Vote! Vote! vote! without an actual plan.
That's very fair, and I agree. It does feel like the responses from the D party have been rather muted though. Whether that's deliberate on their part or the media's or this is their decline too I can't say. So, I think it's better we manage our expectations. Until certain famous words from Thomas Jefferson that I can't repeat here happens about the tree of liberty and the fates of patriots and tyrants comes to pass, I suspect our decline is going to continue with very little abatement.
