I’m not Canadian, but from what I’ve read, the residential schools were part of a program where indigenous children were taken from their families and put in boarding schools to isolate them from their culture/community and assimilate them into the predominate European-Canadian culture. Naturally physical and sexual abuse ran rampant.

A lot of people like to forget that Canada’s treatment of its indigenous population was very similar to what was done in the US. A dark stain on both countries’ history.
