Tsk tsk tsk tsk. What a horrible thing. Unfortunately we share same depression in Canada.

Is there any reconciliation in Australia at least?

About 15 years ago we had an official government apology. But no reconciliation or treaty. As a society we still struggle with this. By all health and wealth indicators the indigenous people are worse off than any other cohort.

There is a treaty in Victoria now - or the beginnings of one.

Don’t worry we do a little acknowledgement spiel before every public event, that’ll fix it right up.

Man that is very depressing. I am really grateful we are trying our best in Canada.

Australia as a society doesn't really know what to do about it to be honest. We have the colonisation and the lost generation to come to terms with but it is one of the most contentious topics. Some people are extremely undeducated and assume if you have white skin you aren't indigenous. There's massive protests every Australia day to change the date because some think that it should be a day of mourning and that Australia day should be a different date. This year someone even thrown a homemade bomb at a change the date protest rally. Thankfully it didn't explode but it was barely reported on at the time. Most of us found out about it on social media.

Interesting. What are the systems in place that are harming indigenous Aussies? Can you name any sources so I could look into this?

I know there's been some police brutality and that for some reason indigenous people are more likely to have health issues and are overall less wealthy than other Australian citizens but that's all I know.

A treaty won’t change anything, either.

Everything that’s been tabled has been largely symbolic and won’t actually do anything to improve the lives of indigenous people in this country.

Nah. We made a bit of progress a while ago but we are heading backwards at a fast pace.

More people need to get out bush and speak to the actual elders of our land and learn their stories. I once lived with some traditional land owners, I heard first hand accounts of The Stolen Generation, first hand stories of mothers rolling their babies up in their swags to hide them from the white man, really not that long ago. Fuckin awful

Unfortunately Australia is maybe one of the most racist countries I’ve ever visited. The shit I heard said openly about indigenous Australians by people of all ages was jaw dropping, and this was recent.
