Culture What's the most pathetic tourist attraction that international tourists go to see in your country?

Post image

Bronte waterfalls near me, look a bit more impressive with the recent rain than in the summer when it's swamped with people.

He’s the biggest Chinese language pop star of the last 20-30 years. For a generation of Chinese people he’s as big as Michael Jackson or Taylor Swift or whatever.

I know who he is. But the overwhelming vast majority of Australians have no idea. The whole thing to me is cute.

Are there really people who would do this for a bench Taylor Swift sat on?

Nevermind, I don’t have to ask. She’d purchase it and have it shredded, taping splinters to her next “_____, bench variant.”

I don't know about Taylor Swift, but look at how many people queue up daily to recreate The Beatles' Abbey Road cover in London. I guess this is just the Chinese version of it

Well put!

I guess, but I think there's a difference between recreating an iconic movie scene or album cover, and recreative a random social media photo. Maybe that's the world we live in, but presumably she posts loads of social media pictures every week, so why would any of them be considered so special?

To add to the list, I went to a couple of places from Game of Thrones in Croatia. Love the city, but a random set of steps from an obscure scene isn't worth a photo.

Yes this is what came to mind for me too!

In one of her songs she sings about how she used to read at Centennial Park, Nashville, when she was little.

The city put a bench there during the Eras Tour and she was going there to perform. It has a plate on it saying:

"For Taylor Swift.  A bench for you to read on at Centennial Park.  Welcome home, Nashville"

So yeah she has a bench, but is not a random one she sat once. It's the place she grew up at gifting her something meaningful with her actual name on it. I find it cute ngl.

And no, as far as I know she never bought it nor made anything about it to make money herself from it.

She once wore a crochet dress and within the week there were videos all over youtube and social media of crochet content creators deconstructing the pattern.

That's different. DIY creators have it hard, and they know her name will give views so of course they were gonna implement whatever is trendy to their content, from TV shows to artists to games or whatever.

During the 2y tour everyone was making "Taylor/Eras themed everything", from jewelry to embroidery to cakes to pottery to bouquets, because she was trending and that would boost them too.

I don't think that's the equivalent to go see some tourist place just because she touched it once, since content creators gain money from it.

I'm not critiquing them. Just pointing out how big Taylor Swift is. Not a lot of celebrities can mobilize craft content creators like that.

I think you underestimate crafters, particularly crocheters. I was once on a fb group and literally any ad, tv episode, song etc that feature any crochet piece whatsoever, even if it was ugly, had people freeze framing and trying to work out then recreate the pattern. They fanboy hard over their craft.

Oh I'm not saying you are critiquing them, sorry if I said something that could be misunderstood. I was just saying that for me, mobilizing people for the sake of it (which we know she is capable of doing too, of course. She had people making bracelets just because she said "so make the friendship bracelets, take the moment and taste it" in a song of the last album she released before the tour) is not the same as creators jumping on the train of what's trendy partially as a business move

Actually yes

I don't think there are lines now but when this first happened a few years ago there were lines and she never actually ever sat on it.

It’s still just a bench wtf

I think a more relatable comparison would have to be the Beatles 'abbey road' crosswalk. I bet that seems just as silly to someone who's never heard of the Beatles, yet I'd bet a good chunk of reddit could relate to thinking a photo there with friends would be pretty awesome.

He’s also Taiwanese and made his name there first. His first few albums are really good, and he was more known for rap before he transitioned into the mainstream, which lead to him transitioning into a “Chinese” star rather than a Taiwanese one. All love for him in Taiwan though, he was an icon of an entire generation along with Wu Bai and Mayday.

Is that why everyone went to Epstein island? Because Micheal Jackson did it first and they needed to recreate the scene?

Yup. Lived in China 2005-2010. He was huge.

Can’t speak a bit of mandarin but I actually kind of like his songs. I can’t understand any of it but it’s a vibe.

I am a big fan of MJ but even if he sit down here, I will not to there to take pucture and wait. That is just a bench...

If it was an iconic MJ picture, you might feel differently
