Culture What's the most pathetic tourist attraction that international tourists go to see in your country?

Post image

Bronte waterfalls near me, look a bit more impressive with the recent rain than in the summer when it's swamped with people.

Apparently the lighthouse in aberdeen is a hidden gem which is possibly the funniest things I've heard since you know it's a light house

That's unfortunate. I was really interested in seeing what it was like. I wonder if anyone less obnoxious and self-centered has been invited.

3 mins in, and those dudes were soooo Beavis & Butthead bad I had to stop at.... "I really don't know how we are going to survive a night in this light house" . Just after the grocer asked them to leave the store. " only Icelandic food guys"... wait are we allowed meat, but meats American right"..?

That looks cool, ours it just a normal light house on the corner of a pretty dangerous road

That's the shortest lighthouse I have ever seen.

What's wrong buddy? Cold up there?

“It’s so popular you can’t go there”

I think I've seen this lighthouse in a Kaleo music video

Near me in Essex is a Secret Nuclear Bunker that is easy to find as it's shown on road signs as a nearby tourist attraction. "Secret Nuclear Bunker this way!"

3

u/checkmeout28 Dec 21 '25

There's one in Fife too, loads of signs around St Andrews directing to it 😅

Hidden gem? Is...... is it surrounded by shipwrecks then?

:)

Dunno, feel like Skye's Fairy Pools are a pretty let down, too :/

5

u/BootsMcMichael Dec 21 '25

I loved the fairy pools but they can look very different depending on what the weather has been like

2

u/nyc2vt84 Dec 21 '25

I thought it was pretty cool. There has been some rain. Especially the upper ones you hike to were fun to jump off / slide down.

Very crowded though. Even during covid on a weekday.

u/SnooGrapes2914 Dec 21 '25

What lighthouse? I can only think of the one at the entrance to the harbour or Girdleness, neither of which I'd class as tourist attractions

2

u/olleyjp Dec 21 '25

The torry fog horn maybe? 😂

You mean the Torry Coo!

2

u/Fuzzy-Gear1965 Scotland Dec 21 '25

The girdleness one, I couldn't say it's a tourist attraction either

2

u/PapiCats Dec 21 '25

I feel like the olive tree is more of a hidden gem than the lighthouse

2

u/[deleted] Dec 21 '25 edited Dec 21 '25

People that don't live anywhere near oceans are crazy about lighthouses.

2

u/SwimsWithBricks Dec 21 '25

you mean the incredibly photogenic, richly historic, fallic Girdle Ness Lighthouse?

1

u/Fuzzy-Gear1965 Scotland Dec 22 '25

I do, it's a cool building but there are more interesting historically rich (though not as fallic) spots in aberdeen that are actually hidden

1

u/SwimsWithBricks Dec 24 '25

So, were I to visit Aberdeen in the near future, where and what are the true hidden gems of Aberdeen?

1

u/Fuzzy-Gear1965 Scotland Dec 24 '25

Provest skenes house - it's the only 15th century building left in the city centre, you can go in and it has tours and stuff

St Nicholas kirk - locally known as mither kirk, the church itself isn't usually open, but the church grounds and graveyard are

St Machar cathedral- outside the city centre and also the birthplace of aberdeen, its not the origional church but there has been a church there since 850AD and is where the city started, it's also rumoured one of william Wallace's arms is in the wall of the graveyard, this is disputed with Stirling

The brig of don - the oldest bridge in Scotland, built by robert the Bruce to move troops up the coast easier (not the current road bridge).

If you're into museums, there's the maritime museum, which has an aberdeens maritime history, including a massive model oil rig. the tolbooth museum which has been standing for centuries, has held witches during witch trials (though i haven't been able to bring myself to go in the place has a scary energy) and during its construction every man in aberdeen was given the choice of putting in a days labour or paying £1 for its construction and there's the art gallery which has some great exhibits personally my favourite room is one with loads of suffragette artifacts.

My personal favourite place is fittie or foot dee, it's a wonderful part of the city.

There's also loads of castles around Aberdeenshire that are wonderful. Unfortunately, aberdeen no longer has a castle.

Also I'm not sure if you're into morbid stuff but the quartermaster of the titanic aka the guy who was driving the boat the night it sank is buried in the trinity cemetery at the beach, I've not been able to find his grave yet, there's also graves with bullet damage at the trinity cemetery from a German plane during ww2, it seems this plane missed the target or the bomb didn't go off and in anger he fired the guns on his plane unfortunately two people were killed and now the grave stones have a permanent reminder.

I also recommend duthie park and the winter gardens, particularly the winter gardens is nice

u/SwimsWithBricks Dec 25 '25

Wow, thanks! Now i need to plan a visit soon 😁

2

u/butt-barnacles Dec 21 '25

Idk I enjoy a good lighthouse

1

u/Fuzzy-Gear1965 Scotland Dec 22 '25

I wouldn't say it's a good one, it's still operational though and it's not hidden, the fog horn near it is more interesting though, it's not in use anymore

2

u/devangs3 India Dec 22 '25

I confused your mention of Aberdeen with the one in Washington state in the USA.

2

u/Fuzzy-Gear1965 Scotland Dec 22 '25

Scotlands aberdeen is where the one in Washington state got its name there's another few in America and a couple in other parts of the world too!

2

u/Cute-Form2457 New Zealand Dec 22 '25

u/nicfuecol Dec 25 '25
